  • Study: Number of Mesothelioma Diagnoses may Hit 3,000 in 2011

New data being released by the National Cancer Institute is predicting that 2011 may see as many as 3,000 mesothelioma victims, or a higher rate than other studies have linked to the deadly cancer in the past.

The NCI data estimates that between 2,500 and 3,000 U.S. citizens will be diagnosed with mesothelioma during 2011. Of those diagnoses, the data also estimate that one-third of all victims would be retired U.S. Navy veterans, while another one-third would be comprised from a number of specific industries, including pipe fitting, plumbing, oil refinery work, ship building, auto mechanics, construction, and city or county municipal duties.

A report from the Washington D.C.-based Environmental Working Group Action Fund that attempted to compile the number of U.S. citizens that died from mesothelioma between 1979 and 2004 found that at least 43,000 – and as many as 60,000 – had passed away due to mesothelioma.

Averaging those figures out over the 25 year period, the average annual death rate was at least 1,720 and as much as 2,400 Americans.

While the figures from the recent NCI data are not drastically different from the 2004 EWGAF report, they do show an increase in the number of mesothelioma cases over time. With asbestos products on the decline since the 1980s, one would think that the number of mesothelioma cases would either decline or at least remain steady instead of increasing. Here’s hoping 2011 stands to be an outlier instead of a harbinger of things to come.
