Carriers settle lawsuit vs. OC Register for $30M
SANTA ANA, Calif. —
Thousands of newspaper carriers have settled their class-action lawsuit against the Orange County Register for a total of $30 million, a lawyer for the carriers said Tuesday.
The carriers alleged that the newspaper’s parent company, Freedom Communications Inc., classified them as independent contractors and not employees, denying them lunch breaks, overtime pay and mileage.
They reached a $28.9 million settlement in June 2009, but the company filed for bankruptcy three months later.

Train derailment sparks $10M lawsuit
ORONTO – Two days after Via Rail train 92 derailed in Burlington, Ont., killing three engineers and sending 45 passengers to hospital, the paperwork has been filed for a $10-million class-action lawsuit.
Law firm Sutts, Strosberg LLP received several calls beginning Monday from passengers interested in pursing damages, but an exact number has yet to be determined.

WorkSafeBC imposes almost $5 million in penalties in 2011
WorkSafeBC imposed 352 penalties in 2011, totaling $4,883,489.89 against employers for violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and the Workers Compensation Act in British Columbia.
The 352 penalties were imposed against 289 individual employers, with penalty amounts ranging from $700 to $250,000. A total of 15 penalties involved work-related fatalities.
